Tools under Rp 100.000 for Architects and Students

Finally, I have the opportunity to write a blog again after almost a month. This time, I want to share and discuss the equipment I use, which is at least needed by every architect (and student) with a price below 100 thousand. Some of these tools are always with me every day when traveling, as I have discussed in the Architect's Everyday Carry. Most of them are sketching tools, and here is the list along with the purchase links.

This notebook makes the lines we draw more visible because they are not obstructed by horizontal and vertical lines usually found in millimeter blocks. Additionally, its small size makes it easy to carry everywhere.

I use this tracing paper to create site plans or layouts above drawings that I have previously printed. The roll form makes it easy to use according to the drawing area. Using tracing paper also allows me to see every process of changes from the initial layout to the final one.

I always provide more than two types of paper for sketching. For plain sketch paper, I use Lyra Sketchbook. Lyra Sketchbook uses a vario zip ring, making it easy to remove and refill paper without opening the rings. Practical and easy to carry everywhere. Lyra also offers paper refills.

Rotring has long been a preferred brand used for architectural drawings or construction design where high precision is required. For architectural sketches, Rotring TIKKY Rapidograph is designed to meet these needs and is also reasonably priced for a technical pencil.

For erasing lines in small or detailed areas. Tombow Mono Zero has a small eraser tip that allows erasing detailed parts of the drawing.

Both brands are well-known in the stationery industry. Used for outlining drawings. The line thickness variations I use most often are 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5.

The best sketch pen for architects. Somehow, the lines produced by this pen feel more architectural. It is suitable for rough sketches or doodles. The brush tip is durable and available in several colors.

A fine brush-shaped tip for coloring large or small areas. Provide at least a few colors like gray, light blue, and brown. Gray for highlighting shadows, light blue for watercolor (ponds, rivers, etc.), and brown for wood color.

One of the high-quality alcohol-based markers used by many artists, especially manga artists in Japan. Copic has two types of pen tips that can be adjusted according to their use and has a wide variety of color options. Its flat shape prevents it from rolling off the table. Like Sakura Koi, you don't need to buy many color variants given their relatively high price. I recommend buying one color each to represent wood, light, water, and vegetation. My choices are YR23, Y13, B01, and G99.

Architects love sketching. To make it more artistic, architectural sketches can be colored, and one alternative tool used is colored pencils. Unlike markers, colored pencils can provide smoother coloring and, most importantly, can be erased if there is a mistake.

A tube for storing drawings. The length of the Drawing Tube can be adjusted according to the size of the drawing paper to be stored.

Google Lens

A powerful application that must be owned by Android and iOS smartphone owners. Google Lens can recognize almost any object in front of it using the smartphone camera. I often use it to identify the types of flowers and plants I find on the street. Google Lens can also recognize places or buildings such as buildings, cafes, restaurants, and other places, providing detailed information about the location, as well as scanning and translating foreign languages.
